More Facebook Changes Ahead....Sigh

When Facebook rolled out the new timeline, I knew that brand pages wouldn't be too far behind. I would like to gently pat every little one on the head when they complain that it is a lot of work to change to the new timeline for their personal or business page. I am almost finishing moving over 70, yes I said 70 different businesses and projects that I have created a Facebook business page for over the years. I haven't breathed properly since the announcement.

After the move over ,the work really begins, it looks like the logo needs to be adjusted some timeline details should be added and everything in my OCD head needs to be perfect. I also need to change some of my monitoring ways because for some reason Facebook didn't deem it necessary to notify you when you receive a new Facebook page message without physically checking it. I promise you, I am not complaining...in a very nerdy way, I am very excited! I will admit it has taken me these few weeks to wrap my head around it and create a game plan so me, my sanity and most important- my clients are happy. This week, I have made a lot of headway.

So, now that my breathing has returned to shallow inhales and exhales, imagine my hands in the head, cuss word reaction when I saw that Facebook was going to make some more changes to its pages. This new change will give its users five different levels of admin access. According to an Inside Facebook article, by the end of March you will have different options for users on the admin level. This is a godsend for me, because I always thought it was very interesting that at any given time a disgruntled waitress who had access to her place of business Facebook page could remove the owners and highjack the page with no problem.

According to the article, Product Manager Jeff Kanter said pages will soon offer five levels of admin access. He mentioned full access, publishing-only access and insights access, but did not reveal the other two levels. Facebook did not respond to article's requests for clarification.

What kind of access would you like to see?? What is the level of trust within your organization that will enable you to give different points of access, now that you have a choice? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Skinny and Clean-Swiss Chard with Garbanzo Beans and Fresh Tomatoes

My latest goal in life, as they change quite often is to eat cleaner. I am having a lot of fun with it, doing the HCG diet for now, but soon I will be transitioning into a Weight Watchers frame of mind, being very conscious in what and how much I am eating. The Clean Eating Diet is interesting to me, so I am gonna throw a little of that in to the mix as well. The goal is to lose a little weight and eat as healthy as possible.

Recently, I blogged about Front Porch Pickings and this new service in our household has increased my goals to use all the organic awesomeness they sent me and not to waste anything. This week, I received strawberries as big as my head, cabbage, apples, tomatoes on the vine, and brussel sprouts as part of my basket-but what was interesting to me was the Swiss Chard. As an Italian, I am all about the Escarole, love Rappini, obsessed over kale and kale chips but have never tried Swiss Chard.

I found a new recipe that I wanted to share. It was easy, quick and even though my boyfriend doesn't like beans...he gave it a thumbs up. I think I am stretching the HCG envelope sneaking in a little bit of northern beans but it was well worth it. Enjoy!

Swiss Chard with Garbanzo Beans and Fresh Tomatoes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 shallot, chopped-I actually used a regular onion in place of shallot and green onions
2 green onions, chopped
1/2 cup garbanzo beans, drained
salt and pepper to taste
1 bunch red Swiss chard, rinsed and chopped
1 tomato, sliced
1/2 lemon, juiced

Directions

Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Stir in shallot and green onions; cook and stir for 3 to 5 minutes, or until soft and fragrant. Stir in garbanzo beans, and season with salt and pepper; heat through. Place chard in pan, and cook until wilted. Add tomato slices, squeeze lemon juice over greens, and heat through. Plate, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Organic Groceries Delivered To Your Doorstep...Yes, Please!

Just like a child, I have that eyes bigger than my stomach disease. Sadly, it goes a little further than what goes on my plate for dinner. MAC eye shadows, nail polish, insert craft supply here, LOFT jeans (how many do I need just because they are on sale?)...an understatement, that I am a little obsessive with my buying habits.

The one thing I am obnoxious is my Farmer's market buying habits, even to me. I go to the Farmer's market like a child in a candy store...tote in hand, so excited to have just a little piece of urban life such as organic goodies. So I buy....and buy...and buy...Then I come home, organize, bag them up in food storage bags (OCD alert!) and then sadly a week later some of it is uneaten and thrown out because it has gone bad...I just have a problem with portion control. Although I probably wont stop visiting my favorite outdoor market, I found a new way to keep my habit in check.

I was turned on to Front Porch Pickings who weekly or biweekly delivers your choice of basket and size or organic awesomeness to your front porch (get it). Initially, I was a little nervous that I would hate not having the control to pick and choose exactly what I wanted. But after my first delivery yesterday, I think that this is my new favorite thing and I am really excited. A more official description of how it works is here.

On Wednesday, I received an email as to what my basket would be, to ease that whole control freak aspect a little-you do have the opportunity to double up and delete on something you don't like. They are very flexible. I was instructed to leave a cooler with ice and they would see me Friday. Sure enough, when I came home Friday there was a huge refrigerator bag waiting for me! What I liked about the selection and more important the quantity was perfect for one to people with the small basket.

In my basket, for only $20 mind you there were:
tangerines
sweet potatoes
HUGE green onions
salad greens
mini cucumbers
strawberries
Brussel sprouts
grape tomatoes

I am very excited to get through this first batch and make some recipes, any ideas? The website for Front Porch Pickings is here, and I am sure that they have something similar in your neck of the woods. Oh, and I found a blog that will help me store the stuffage properly!

Skinny and Clean-Loaded Turkey Santa Fe Baked Potato Skins

I have made a vow to eat cleaner and really think about what I am putting into my mouth. I will be really clear, I love food, I love to cook and I am excited about the new ways of counting calories, eating cleaner and watching what you eat is the new trend.

No offense to anyone, but for me-I just won't give up meat, eggs, cheese or pasta...I just can't and I just won't. Some of my favorite websites feature healthy recipes that are so good, I can't wait to turn you on to them!

My first recipe is from the Skinny Taste website. I receive a daily email from her website with healthy, yummy Weight Watcher pointed recipes. When we started following each other on Twitter, imagine my delight to find out that she is from Oceanside, Long Island where my whole family is from! WHOOP! Get ready to be very hungry at all these recipes!

Loaded Turkey Santa Fe Baked Potato Skins-Potato Skins filled with spiced turkey, black beans and tons of spices gives this a unique flavor-and guess what? They are Gluten-Free! Perfect for quick entertaining now for a NASCAR race (starts this week!)

Socially Acceptable-Zip List

Getting organized in all areas is always a goal of mine. I would like to have every facet of my life in a complete organized manner and I am slowly chipping away at it.I am also trying to eat healthier, cook at home more and really be very aware of what I am putting in my mouth (more about that later).

I love trying new recipes and I have discovered a really fun website, app, etc. to keep them all in one place. Ziplist is my new fascination of late. Ziplist is fun because a lot of my favorite foodie websites like Skinnytaste and Lalaloosh have partnered with them to add them to their websites. The idea is with one click you can add the recipes you like to your list and if you want to get crazy make a shopping list with the ingredients you choose. You can search and save from over 100 websites that are partners and once you get your list going you can plan out your week, and sort by ingredient (like you are craving chickens) The list of partners are some of my favorites. Another good feature of Ziplist is that it has a mobile app so you can take your list with you to the supermarket.

The website promises to Plan Weekly Shopping Needs, Organize Grocery Trips and Save Time & Money
Check it out here and please let me know what you think. Sidenote-Why don't you take the partner list and put all those yummy blogs into your Google reader?? I am going to do that right now!! YAY!

Budweiser Shootout Fun

My former project Racing Fashionistas was the most fun I ever had in social media. I will say again that it taught me so much how to market a blog, it gave us amazing opportunities within the sport, made us strong advocates for brands on Twitter based on the success we had and I have made some amazing friends and contacts thanks to it. It breaks my heart that it has been one year since we posted on there. There is just no time. I wish there was. However, in order for me to have the best of both worlds, you may get a little #NASCAR action on here this week.
This is normally our view from where we watch the race from our friend's pit box. I thought they were gonna win this race, those Bass Pro boys!

Thanks to the glory of photography, this looks like Kyle is crossing the finish line...sadly its after the win...I am not that good!

Highly Acclaimed-Skinnygirl Releases WINE!!!!

I am becoming a bigger fan of Bethenny every day. She is the driving force behind the Skinnygirl brand, books, website, drinks, etc. etc. This is a woman entrepreneur who a girl like me can easily idolize.  Today the adoration just elevated to the kind of worship where one can hear angels sing. On her website and Facebook, Bethenny announced that in April she will be adding WINE to her collection of Skinnygirl cocktails. Wine!! Each only 100 calories and three new varietals-Red, White and Blush! Looks like I have a new food group!

From Bethenny's website

Read, read, read all about it and try to breathe shallow breaths! That is what I will be doing till April!

Daytona International Speedway Gets Social (Media)

Yesterday, in the anticipation of Speedweeks, my favorite time of year-I received a press release that the Daytona International Speedway is vamping up their social media and ways to connect to the track. No matter which way you choose to connect, QR Codes, Facebook, their website or Twitter...they have you covered.

Read full article from News Daytona Beach, which is a part of Black Crow Media, MRN Affiliates.

One side note that I dont think they thought about is the length of their Twitter hashtags. As you know Twitter only allows you 140 characters. The benefit of Twitter is that it is brief, and to the point.

Some I thought were terribly long

#BudweiserShootout

#GatoradeDuel

@NextEra_Energy Resources 250-what is this? Can't be a Twitter name and if they meant it as a hashtag-that is almost 20 characters!

#DRIVE4COPD300

This is when I miss my former project terribly. Every year, we talk about the resurrection of Racing Fashionistas, a fun pet project with my bestertons that taught me everything I knew about blogging and promoting and was the business plan for Little Blog Dress. Maybe I can convince them this year to try again, but it is a lot of work!

The one event that is bigger to me than any race?? THIS!

Lenny Kravitz will be performing at the Daytona 500 and I will be there!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!  If nothing else, I need an upgrade from this picture, stat!

Check out those pants!!! (It was the 90's... give me a break)

NBC's Own Superbowl Promo

NBC is my favorite network....hands down. I always wonder if people take the time to think about why they watch what or is it only  I that is so crazy. I have been watching The Today Show since before I can remember, and a Saturday Night Live fanatic (to put it mildly)...I just love all that is at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. NBC is always my network of choice...I couldn't even tell you much about the other three from a news perspective.

This Superbowl commercial was a brilliant marketing nugget. Taking a song from How to Succeed in Business without Trying shows me that NBC knows how to do exactly that. Enjoy the NBC family from your favorite shows and news teams in a fun three minute promo to promote the network the best way they know how. Which part is your favorite??

Jason Wu for Target Plan Of Attack...I mean Action

My OCD in anticipation on the Jason Wu for Target launch tomorrow is almost more than I can stand. I must say that this blog post is so much more for me than it is for you. I have to somehow organize my thoughts and buying strategy like I did for the Missoni launch.

Thankfully, for this launch I am not leaving an Anthrax concert, (sad but true) talking to my girl friend Nada of Beauty Mommy on the streets of NY freaking out that somehow I have to get back to Brooklyn and try to get on the shoddy internet connection to make these purchases happen. No midnight launch!!! So when I woke up by chance at 4am...yes I told you I am crazy...made three, THREE separate transactions for fear that I would lose the connection. Sound crazy? You obviously didn't hear that the Target website CRASHED at 8:30am...who is the sucker now?? Even my boyfriend understood that I wasn't joking when sources he deemed official reported on the crash and has steered clear of me for my game plan tomorrow. Even my best friend gets it now,  who initially couldn't understand why I cared that MERONA was having a new line.

Tomorrow 8am, and prob non stop checking online over night I will be front and center at my Target with a plan..hoping my friends Rene and Nada will join because crazy loves company!!! I feel less insane with a partner! I hear somewhere in the heavens my dad saying if only you took your work this serious! Thank you to Nitrolicious for providing me with this canvas of crazy.

My picks:

Trench Coat in Black, $54.99
Flared Dress in Black with Nude Patent Belt, $59.99

I Have Bills To Pay Too

For the first time since I started my business , I have been having issues with a couple of clients paying their bills on time. Before I started my business, my whole professional life has been in radio and a sales person for them for over a decade, The radio station is set up that you are paid on what you collect, rather than what you bill. I am eternally thankful for this method. It has made me stronger as a business owner. When your next meal depends on how well you collect on your invoices- you get really good at going to get your money each month.

A common obstacle for some business owners is asking for the dollar in the first place, and then there is sometimes an issue getting them to pay on time. While I have no struggle with the former, I am amazed at how many of my fellow small business owners are lax to pay my measly tab in a timely manner. I know that business is business but I am a little unnerved that these are the people that know better than anyone else how important it is to be paid in a prompt manner...and they just don't do it. That is why I was drawn to work with them in the first place, because I thought they would be the ones who were most sensitive to these kind of things. While a medium size business can have a $400 or $500 receivable that goes 90 days out without feeling it, that is a huge chunk for me. This week, I had a client texted me, I have many bills due...I will pay you when I can. Because, I don't have many bills due, right?

Although there are policies that I am putting in place, it really shakes my small business morale that people don't do the right thing for one of their own. How do you deal with non paying clients?

Traveling Socially

I just returned from a trip to San Diego! I love that I have all these tools at my disposal to make my trip as stress free as possible. Some of my favorites:

Tripit-I love Tripit because when you are gathering your trip information and trying to make a game plan, this really gives you a nice platform to get all your plans in one place. What is really great is that you can forward your reservation to them and they will put it all perfect for you to start your trip. When I asked people what to do while in San Diego, I just made a note in my Tripit and stored their information. You can also share your trip with your friends and your social network.

NOTHING could have prepared me for the Kansas City MO airport....BLICK.....

Southwest- This is the first time that I used my phone to check us in.  Especially with Southwest who has an interesting boarding process, was I ever lucky to have that at my fingertips exactly 24 hours prior to boarding.

Yelp Really the holy Grail to any traveler. I will be happy when this area really embraces it. We looked up anywhere we wanted to eat or drink to make our decision on the best place to go using Yelp.

Groupon  If I can offer one piece of advice, when you book your trip sign up for that cities Groupon or Living Social. How else would we have known about the whale watching tour for $18/person! Seriously!

The World's Worst Whale Picture

Until Instagram comes out for the Android (when God WHEN??) this app made for some fun pictures.

Thanks to my Ipad, I read three books and about 4 magazines. And because I am such a Foursquare nerd, I packed in a whole ton of great points checking in all over sunny California.

Oh! I almost forgot...I had a nice little rendez-vous with my favorite guilty pleasure Pinterest. I was so busy getting ready for my trip, I hadnt been on in weeks!

What am I missing? What is your must have apps for your vacation??

I guess I should make mention that THIS was the best thing I brought with me on my vacation!

The One Woman Show

This Staples Dave Commercial, although this version not so great in quality, is brilliant. It really defines what it is like to be a small business owner. You are the receptionist, the sales person, the accountant, the planner, and the one who fixes your office equipment.

As much as I love being in business for myself it definitely comes with its own sets of obstacles. For instance, we are going on a much needed vacation next week to San Diego (any must sees?). While I am thankful I don't have to count my vacation time or be really nice to a Devil Wearing Prada so she will let me off-there is a large amount of anxiety leaving your baby for a whole week. If I can be honest, unless I leave the county with no cell phone service...I wont be able to turn it off completely.

In A Small Business, It is all you... is the Staples tagline...but, how do you do it? Pin It

Wu WOOOOOOOOOOO

Jason Wu for Target has had some pictures leak. Thank you SheFinds...I know that I have that same weak feelings in the knees I did when Missoni came out for Target...But few in dear sweet Daytona Beach doesn't know who Jason Wu is...only my friend Beauty Mommy understands how exciting this is.

And that. is. completely. fine.

Long live small towns! More clothes for us! A slight fear that they may not give us a full shipment at our Target but here is hoping! My picks (thanks to Shefinds and the Times for the sneak peek! )

Ways To Bring In The New Year Resolution(s)

I haven't made too many personal resolutions this year...some professional ones, yes but sometimes I feel like Resolutions come with way too much pressure. Am I really going to stop cursing like a sailor? Just because  it turned January 1st? I don't think that is humanely possible. Am I gonna eat healthier? I was talking to someone today and they said everyone worries about what they eat between Christmas and New Year's wouldn't it be great if they worried about what they ate between New Year's and Christmas?? (Get it??) That is a good concept to ponder. Will I go and do more yoga as my gazillion dollar unlimited yearly membership sits and laughs at me?

Here are some apps to help you with your resolutions:

Exercise

Couch to 2K...yes you can start anywhere and this is a good place to begin. Please hurry and make this app for the Android. I miss my British lady saying "you have thirty seconds before you can start walking again...and stop dying"

Eat

My Fitness Pal This is one of the best free apps and websites that you can count calories. You can choose from their expansive database of menu choices or choose your own. You can also customize meals if you eat the same thing day in and day out.

SkinnyTaste. I have been getting Gina's recipes so long, I love them. The fact that she is from my family's home town is even better. Her amazing recipes has point systems attached and can get you off to the best start for the New Year

Urban Skinny This is a easy read from women who believe that calorie counting is the way to go. The part I like the best about this website is that they tell you the good, the bad and the ugly on all foods. So when you are eating Mexican you know which are safe bets. Its a great book!

When all else fails....Pray

So maybe I haven't seen much of a church other than a wedding or a funeral in quite some time. Get back to your roots with the free app Daily Bible and every morning have a short verse for your to peruse and apply to your day.

Love

On the love list....the greatest idea EVER for a foodie like me. Think pen pal with food. I am so excited I can't wait to get started on my first month! How cool to have a new package each month of foodie goodness!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderful Kimberly Wilson and her brand new
Tranquilologie: a DIY sprinkling of everyday tranquility-this do-it-yourself guide will take you from january through december with daily doses of inspirational ideas on everything from nesting to style to creative expression with a yoga sequence that complements each month. Its a must to bring in 2012!

In all honesty, make an effort to resolve and then move on, You can wait till next year for the resolution...just eat healthy, walk every once in a while and try something new this year...and when you get in a really bad mood...check out this website and get your laugh on. Its the greatest even for the worst of days. Pin It

Resolutions on My Mind

“If you asked me for my New Year Resolution, it would be to find out who I am.” ~Cyril Cusack

Happy 2012!! It is weird how the holiday fell...there is a lot of room for free time off if you can take it! I didn't realize that most people are taking tomorrow off...I am a little conflicted as to how hard to work when everyone else is playing.

Do you know that I hate New Year's? I cry ever year at midnight. I dont know why it makes me so emotional. I am on top of the world and yet again I wanted to go to bed on the 30th and wake up on the 1st. But, we ended up having a really fun New Year's! Actually, we have had fun week watching the Noles whoop it up on Notre Dame on Thursday and we spent time being very very lazy on Friday. It was awesome.

For New Year's, we decided to do Surf and Turf-Check out our Larry's!

The night ended nice and quiet with the one I love. I am thankful. I do want to share my cat's  New Year's celebration. She is in love with Seth Meyers and Kermit like I am...I thought she was gonna pust through the TV...she has never did this before...and she is 13!

Today began with a smile as my first article was published on Women of Google+ this morning. I am really looking forward to being a part of what they do in 2012. I am obsessed with Google+ as I know have a very good grasp of what it is and what it can do. I have been studying it for days, bought Chris Brogan's book on it and I am now just so excited about this platform. I feel like I am let in on a secret that is gonna go gangbusters. I can't wait to see what it can do for my clients. I imagine I drive them nuts with all the things I think they should do, but I am excited!

2011, I bid you adieu...my first year as a business owner was pretty freaking great. Aside from that whole skimming incident. I learned a lot, stayed true to what I believed in professionally and connected with a lot of cool people along the way.

My wish for 2012? Build my business, find more and more ideas to streamline its efficiency...write my face off and work towards that world domination goal of mine.

What is your wish?

Why Blog For Your Business?

Blogging for Businesses is probably the easiest way to move your chains up the SEO path. I  feel that it is the easiest and most organic thing that you can do to increase search engine optimization (moving you up in Google) for your business. A blog best explained is micro website that gives you a chance to provide new updated content about your business quickly and easily. Its not that I am not a fan of websites or web designers because that would be silly, I just like adding a blog component to your website to modernize the whole update process.

In my opinion, humble as it is, there should not be a website around without a blog component. These blogs can be made to look exactly like your website and as you provide new content that gives the web more things to pick up and list under you when you are searched online. You can write original content or you can share articles that are in your field that would be of interest to your client base. (Don't forget to credit your source). Or you can do a little bit of both like I am here.

I have known my friend Mike Wolpert of Social Jumpstart  for over a decade when we both worked in radio together. He has moved on to bigger and better things in sunny CA and I am happy to be able to follow all of his awesomeness. He does a lot of cool multimedia stuff like educational training videos and a television show. I really liked what he had to say about Blogging for your Business and wanted to share his You Tube. Enjoy and take notes, because I sure did!

Enhance Your Overall Social Media

Any given day you can look on the internet and get smart tips from "experts" such as myself. Although they mostly say the same thing, I like these tips from Mantra....especially number 3 which I feel is the most imperative one!

Here are five important tips that will enhance your overall social media marketing experiences:
Source

1. Create a landing page. A landing page is a one-page website that offers your visitors a quick peek at you and your small business before they are “overwhelmed” by your business website. In addition, successful landing pages offer visitors a valuable free offer in exchange for their name and email address. Landing pages are crucial to business success because they allow prospects to connect with you on a more personal level, quickly highlight the benefits of doing business with you and give your prospects a small taste of what your small business is all about.

2. Set up complete profiles on your social networks. If you want your marketing efforts to work, make sure that your social media profiles are complete. If prospects land on your profile page and it doesn’t have a picture and contains sparse information, they aren’t likely to feel any connection with you. You should provide as much information about yourself as possible. Remember, people want to get to know you, so give them what they’re looking for.

3. Participate; don’t push. When marketing on social media platforms, always keep in mind the 80/20 rule. You should spend 80% of your time sharing, answering questions and interacting with others and only 20% of your time promoting  your small business. If you stick to this rule, you’ll be viewed as a true participant as opposed to a pushy salesperson.

4. Be consistent. Social media marketing is all about consistency. It’s extremely important that prospective clients see you on a regular basis. Exposure is the key to gaining your client’s trust and eventual business. So, get on those sites and interact on a daily basis.

5. Create a daily schedule. If you don’t have a schedule, it won’t take long before you’re sucked into the “social media black hole.” Determine how much time you have to devote to your social media marketing and stick to it. If you only have 30-minutes each day, then only utilize three social networking sites and generate a strong presence on them. I like to use a timer (honestly!) to keep myself on track;when it beeps, I’m off to the next site.

Using Groupon For The Holidays

No secret that I am a big fan of Groupon. We have one here in the city that I live, which is odd because commonly we seem to get looked over in Daytona Beach for a lot. Most of the time we are not known for much more than formerly being the Spring Break Destination in MTV's heyday.

I like how it really works for most businesses if you have the manpower to see it through and the promotional sense to do something special for your Grouponers (is that even a word) when they come in your business to redeem. I have been excited to have worked on a number of Groupon campaigns for some of my clients and nearly all of them have had measurable success.

According to an article last month in the Huffington Post, Groupon is stepping up their A game and offering deluxe offers with Grouponicus which are amazing trips at a Groupon discount, Epic Deals like a a cooking class with Chef Todd English.

Even if you just wanted use Groupon for your holiday shopping, it isn't a bad idea. I am not a 1000 percent sure that this isn't what some may consider tacky but in today's economy, I think what is most important is that the thought now counts more than ever.

There is also ways to use Groupon to take your personal holiday budget a little further. For the most of obsessives of all that is compulsive, imagine my sheer glee when I found the Daily Dibs article on how you can have all the National deals emailed to you daily for you to peruse! This will make my Groupon rep very happy because it gives me an additional resource instead of bothering him..."Hey, John can you help me find the city that has the Barnes and Nobles Groupon? (best Groupon EVER)." There are ways using this resource to find a discount on your holiday cards, get a deal on canvassing that print you have been thinking about etc and maybe give you ideas for that hard to buy person all while saving at least 50% on the price,  Brilliant!

I also wanted to make mention that Groupon offers gift cards for the people on your list that like Groupon as much as I do. You can have them emailed or snail mailed or you can, a better choice I think, go to CVS or Target and get one physically. Definitely, this just became a part of gifts to buy for those people that are just really hard to get exactly what they want. Year End Musings

As most people do, when the year comes to an end...I tend to get a tad whimsical looking at the year that is ending. What have I done right? What could I improve? What was a total waste of my time? Most people don't really focus on the right, they want to focus on what to change, and what (or who) to get rid of as the year ends.

Am I following the rules or making them up as I go along? Can I actually do that or am I just being a complete pompous individual by creating my own work environment? I preach I say who, I say when, I say how much...but is there a fine line? Should I never ever work with someone difficult just because I don't have to? Isn't that arrogant?  Will it make me broke? Should I take the hit (after Christmas of course) and rid myself of the random few that give me the most aggravation? The ones that I have to chase to pay, the ones that do not respect that it is not ok to call at 10p because he was "thinking" about something... Isn't that why I went into business for myself to not be aggravated or am I a fool to think that one can be stress and agro free in a work environment?

I learn every day what it is like to be in business for yourself and the different peaks and valleys that comes with it but these are the things that I am thinking of as the year comes to an end. I would really love your comments and your experiences below. Pin It

5 Reasons Your Business Should Be Blogging

A lot of people do not really grab the concept of the importance of blogging. I promote it as a way to have constant movement for those SEO outlets to push you up towards the top of search engines. Read below at the best article from Marcus Sheridan (@thesaleslion) I have seen in a while on the importance of why everyone should have a blog component to their website.

Good thing you know JUST the person to help you maintain and manage it!

Does your business blog?

Have you been thinking it might be time to consider a blog, but aren’t sure (a) you can pull it off and (b) it will provide value?

Keep reading. This article will help you (or someone you know) understand the value of a business blog.

Is Google the Only Reason to Blog?

I have a question for you, and it’s a serious one: If you never garnered another single visitor to your company blog through search engine optimization (SEO), would you still have one?

For many, especially execs who don’t necessarily “get it” when it comes to content marketing, the answer would be, “No way!”

But for those persons and companies that have watched the magic of blogging and its effect beyond SEO, the answer would be a resounding, “Of course!”

That’s what this article is all about. There’s much more to having a company blog than just getting more visitors to your website because Google decided to send them there.

In fact, here are 5 other powerful reasons why you should be blogging, and I look forward to hearing what you would add in the comments section at the end.

#1: The Power of Team

Ever heard of HubSpot? The Boston-based company and all-in-one social media platform for small- and medium-sized businesses is one of the fastest-growing in the world, and considering Google just invested $32 million in the company, they seem to be on solid ground.

Although there are many reasons HubSpot is rocketing up the charts of the business world, one of the core components to their success model is the “team” feel of the company. Ranked two straight years as the #1 Best Place to Work by the Boston Business Journal, HubSpot allows EVERY single person in the company to produce content for the company blog. With over 300 employees, you can see why it’s nothing for them to post 3-5 articles on most days.

By allowing all employees to create content, companies like HubSpot have a constant flow of new names and ideas on their blog.
When it comes down to it, we, as humans, like to be part of a movement. We want to be part of a team. When all hands are on deck and each person is contributing to building the company’s content base, magic and momentum can truly happen, and all benefit together.

And keep in mind, this principle isn’t just for large companies. Whether you’re an army of 1, 5 or 500, working as a team to produce content can have a powerful effect on any company or organization.

#2: Blogging Sharpens Your Sword

Before I started teaching people about business and marketing, I was (and still partially am) a “pool guy.” That’s right, I own a company that builds in-ground swimming pools throughout Virginia and Maryland. Over the last 10 years I’ve had over 1000 in-home sales appointments.

Sales professionals constantly answer the same questions again and again. By writing out these answers, their ability to communicate with prospects and clients goes up exponentially.
Three years ago, when I embraced the power of content and started our company blog, I noticed many benefits. One of which was the fact that my sales presentations became much, much better. How so?

By creating 2 to 3 articles a week for my blog:

I was forced to stay up to date with every new technology in the industry.
I became much better at explaining things in a way the consumer could clearly understand. (In other words, I learned how to become a better teacher.)
I found that I seemed to have an answer for every question a customer could throw at me.
Simply put, writing a blog post is like practicing for a game. The more one practices, the better their skills, timing and overall play—which ultimately leads to more victories, or in this case, sales.

#3: You Become the Trust Agent

When it comes to blogging, the process of making sales is not nearly as complicated as we sometimes make it. Look at it this way:

Helpful Content = Trust

Trust = Leads

Leads = Sales

Do you remember your kindergarten teacher? (Yes, I know that was a long time ago, but try.)

How did he or she make you feel? Did you trust him/her?

Although there are many reasons why most of us love our earliest teachers, the biggest reason we respect and appreciate them so much is because they took the time to patiently teach us things in a way we could actually understand.

That’s right; they weren’t there to impress anyone, as their only goal was helping us understand.

When a company’s blog takes on this “kindergarten content” approach, they do everything in their power to answer consumer questions by seeing the world from the consumer’s point of view, not their own.

Once this occurs, walls of doubt are torn down and the trust level between the customer and the company immediately starts to go up.

Genuinely helpful articles, like this one above, will generate huge amounts of trust from consumers wanting to spend their money wisely.
And as I mentioned above, this trust will lead to more phone calls to your office, more forms filled out on your web page and eventually many more sales.

#4: Content is the Great Qualifier

Has your company ever gotten a lead that wasn’t exactly qualified or ready for your product/service? Chances are, if you’ve been in business for longer than a day, this has happened many, many times.

And when it comes to sales, the more time a sales department spends with unqualified leads, the less time they spend with qualified ones, which is obviously a very bad thing.

There are generally two types of consumers:

Price Shoppers: someone only focused on lowest price to make their buying decision
Value Shoppers: someone looking for a combination of product quality, customer service and reasonable pricing to make their buying decision
Ask any sales and marketing department which client they’d rather have and they’ll tell you “value.”

I mention this because with the advancement of the Internet, companies can now track behaviors of their leads when it comes to the content customers are viewing on their website.

For example, here are two leads my company has gotten in the last week. Which appears more prepared for a sales appointment?

Someone who has read 55 pages of your website.Someone who has read 3 pages of your website.
100 out of 100 will say the first one, as that particular person has shown not only are they a serious shopper, but they’re also very, very informed as to the company’s teachings and product doctrine. (BTW, if you’re not blogging, there’s a good chance your company website doesn’t even have 55 pages, so let’s get busy!)

Remember, the more pages a visitor reads on your website, the closer they are to making a buying decision with your company, so integrate your blog’s content into every aspect of your sales approach.

Also, if you’re not currently using a technology that allows you to track lead analytics, I’d strongly recommend it, as it can save your company thousands and thousands in saved time alone.

#5: The Power of the Blog Comment

Does your company blog allow for comments and promote discussion? If not, you’re missing out on a golden opportunity to learn from readers and allow them to tell you exactly what they’re interested in.

Often businesses approach blogging from a very myopic and limited point of view, and simply don’t do a good job of seeing the world through the eyes of the consumer.

By promoting active discussion on your company blog and then truly listening to what is said, you will constantly get questions from individuals wanting to find out more, much of which can then be turned into another blog post.

As you might imagine, this cycle of “teach then listen” can become an ever-flowing content factory for any company that takes the time to do this the right way.

Also, the comment section of a blog is your great opportunity to build a community of passionate individuals who appreciate your company’s brand and mission, thereby becoming your greatest advocates, on- and offline.

Comments + Conversation = Passionate Community
Now It’s Your Turn

I’ve shown you 5 reasons (beyond SEO) why your company should have a blog. But I’ve also intentionally left out many others because I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter as well.

What do you think? Have you seen these 5 benefits within your company? Which one has made the most impact? Also, what would you add to the list?

Jump in, everyone! I love nothing more than discussing the power of great content, so please leave your thoughts and questions in the comments box below.
